Change Chance (2015)
Deterritorialization, “The movement by which one leaves the territory” (Deleuze and Guttari) can also be seen as a process which helps define the territory itself. In this audiovisual installation, I place myself as the medium to intervene and break a specific group’s territory within society. By getting involved in it, sounds we normally hear but do not listen to may be pointed out and translated into other meanings.
The word: “Changes” is heard from someone off-screen asking for money in the subway under the Elephant and Castle roundabout. With repetition, the word seems to become “Chance”, and its situational meaning morphs through misunderstanding. “Chance” is at the core of this work. The newspaper sat and left by the people asking for money was taken by the artist to another place; as a symbolic marker of territory, its relocation creates new possibilities and relationships with its occupant.
